140 glaciers flow from the Southern Alps, but of these only the Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers penetrate down to the tropical West Coast rainforests. Given that the Franz Josef Glacier is only a few kilometres from the township, it's often surprising to find such a temperate climate here, with Franz Josef experiencing a mild climate due to it's proximity to the sea. Guided walks and climbing experiences are offered on the Glaciers. Many tourists also choose to partake in Heli-hikes, or scenic flights.
